Duncan’s Economic Blog

Back from Holidays

Posted in Uncategorized by duncanseconomicblog on September 1, 2009

I’m back after a couple of weeks away. I’m currently working my way through a rather full inbox so normal service won’t be fully resumed until tomorrow.

I seem to have inadvertently been on a tour of tax havens (Guernsey, Sark, Jersey, Geneva & then Rome – ok the last one isn’t a tax haven).

A few random thoughts –

It’s quite distressing how many branches of RBS, NatWest, HBOS and Lloyds one comes across in Geneva and the Channel islands.

Swiss politics is very weird. Posters everywhere protesting against a VAT rise from 7.5% to 8%.

Despite the latest Berlusconi allegations being featured in the UK press and on Sky News/CNN – not a mention in the Italian press.

Why do I feel the need to respond in French to questions asked in Italian? This would be more explicable if I actually spoke French…
